"Shift Happens – or Not!"

In the Slipstream February/March 2025 issue Porsche Club tech session was hosted by MC Squared Autosport in Lewisville, TX, led by renowned PDK expert Michael Conn.

Key Take Aways:

  • Most modern Porsches now use the PDK dual-clutch transmission. It’s brilliant when it works but can be very expensive when it doesn’t.

  • Over 30% of all PDK transmissions will eventually have a significant fault. When that happens, dealers often quote a full replacement transmission for $25k–$35k+.

  • Michael Conn spent the day walking the PCA members through a complete PDK teardown and rebuild. He showed us that almost every common PDK failure is repairable in-house using specialized tools he has engineered and processes

  • With proper diagnosis, regular fluid/filter service, early intervention, and the right independent shop, most owners can avoid the catastrophic “new transmission” bill.

  • Bottom line from Michael: “Do the maintenance on time and if something feels off, get it looked at immediately. The difference between a $4k–$12k repair and a $30k one is usually just a few thousand miles of neglect.”

Knowledgeable independent specialists like MC Squared can now fully service and rebuild PDKs. Something that was almost impossible just a few years ago.

PDK nightmares are real, but with proper care and the right shop, they’re largely preventable and fixable.
